Fitts's law: Speed and Start values for common devices

Hi, 

I am in search for the average start-stop and speed values for common devices like mouse and use of fingertip.

Fitts's Law: MT = a + b log2(2A/W)

the values I am in search for are a and b in the formula. Exlanations of the Law can be find everywhere, but almost all state that a and b are device-dependent and can be determined experimentally. Instead of setting up a valid experiment straight away I would like to ask if somebody already has determined the values for common pointing devices.

Hello Jan,   One resource that you might consider is:   Card, S. K., Moran, T. P., & Newell, A. (1983). The psychology of human-computer interaction. Hillsdale, NJ: Lawrence Earlbaum.

    I don't have my copy with me right now or I would check for you, but the estimates used for GOMS KLM modeling are listed in this classic book and I believe that there are some estimates for the both Fitts coefficients.  The other sources would be the ACM Digital Library where there are dozens of articles on Fitts' law with empirical research on various ways to circumvent Fitts' law.

A summary information on Fitts' law, the improved shannon formulation MT = a + b * log(d/w + 1),  common (ISO) test setups to measure a and b, the effective target size to compensate for the speed-accuracy tradeoff, and two comparison of many studies, which include ranges of a and b of different devices, can be found in
