At the IxDA Vancouver '09 conference, someone gave a demo of an application they were building that can be used to convert and prepare a website for use/view on a mobile phone—can someone give any info about this group, links? Also, if you know of any open source tools out there that can achieve the same goal, please share. Thanks

Well I came across PhoneGap (http://phonegap.com/) a while back, not quite what you asked for but it's still really fancy :)
Other vice I've had quite a bad experience with quick and automatic converters. I really wouldn't use one since the mobile users objective and situation is rather different to that of the desktop. I've got some useful articles to help you get started if you chose that path instead.

For what CMS? For a personal site?
If going for a simple site, try http://mobify.me/ (is probably the one you saw demoed) For Wordpress with a bit of control, try http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wordpress-mobile-pack/ For a complex site, try http://wapple.net/ For a fully complex site with 100% control, try http://bemoko.com/
For writing in web technology and converting to app, try PhoneGap or Rho Mobile.
