Please let's not engage in fear-mongering. Out of Office auto-replies
are a normal part of email these days. Many companies set such
replies for employees when they know the employee is on vacation, or
people may set them manually. There's nothing sinister about that.
IxDA is a large list. Simple statistics will tell you that on any
given day a small percentage of the list members will be on vacation,
and some percentage of those will have OoO replies set.
The problem lies in how the list email is sent. Each email message
appears to be sent "to me" which is to say it looks like a personal
message, not a mailing list message. Thus, the rules that govern the
OoO response cannot properly detect list email from personal mail, and
so these filters auto-respond to the list. Most OoO software is built
to avoid replying to lists for this very reason, but due to the broken
email headers ( each message to the list is triggering those softwares
to respond. Once the headers are fixed this problem will disappear.
