Just had a quick question regarding the capabilities of an iPhone.
To what extent can an iPhone connected to a dock control the external device that hosts the dock with an iPhone app ?
For example: Lets assume I have a radio which also has a dock to mount the iPhone. Will it be possible for me to create an iPhone app that can control the radios tuner?
Would be really really helpful if someone can clarify the extent to which an iPhone can control an external device through a dock!
Thank you in advance!!
That depends on the device you're trying to control but the short answer is: yes.
The slightly longer would be: The 30-pin iPhone dock connector, bluetooth and wireless communication elements of the iOS SDK accept custom, as well as standard, communication protocols. So you can create any kind of communication you want (getting it on the app store is another matter though), it is just up to the receiving end how to process the data you send (for your example: the intelligence has to be in the radio to know how to interpret the signal to an action).
There's the developer.apple.com intro to it: http://developer.apple.com/technologies/iphone/sdk/accessories.html
Hope it helps,
Thanks a ton for the quick response Kal ! That was the answer I was hoping to receive. :)
Since I am not a developer, I couldn't validate my hunch. Thanks again!
