UX mentor and/or design projects wanted to help build experience!

I've been in the UX field for 3+ years now but I keep hitting a series of bumps (starting with a layoff in 2009) that have prevented me from expanding my professional design portfolio. The majority of my professional work has revolved around usability evaluation and user research, although I have done some design work professionally, on the side, and in grad school. For the past year, my professional work has focused on usability testing and user research.
I want to take on some "practice" assignments in my spare time to help me build up my portfolio. I'd be open to helping someone with "real" project work if they would let me use what I create in my portfolio. Any takers?

Hi Astrid, IxDA Boston is running a program where we're matching up, old hands with young guns, designers with developers and events with real world projects.
If you have any experience with Java/Processing, HTML, Video production, visual design (logos, style guide level stuff) or data visualisation (in Processing) we would love to hear from you for our Follow The Money project http://ftm.bostonixda.org/
Post a link to your portfolio so I can get a better understanding of your strengths and where we might best apply you if you're interested.
Thanks /pauric
Hi Pauric,
Do you have to be in the Boston area to participate in this event? I have just completed my Masters in Interaction Design & Electronic Arts and am also trying to build a bigger portfolio on the UX side of things. I have years of design experience (i.e. web, graphic, video, presentation) and have used processing in my degree program to build data visualizations using real time data. I have also built some projects with the arduino, coded with processing and an array of sensors for prototyping. I’m originally from NY but I'm based in Australia so if I can work on this virtually it would be great.
Best,
Dave
Hi Dave,
That sounds like a really great program you attended. What school was it at? I would be really interested to check out your portfolio!
Cheers,
Rachel

Hi Rachel,
The program I attended was at the University of Sydney. The program was very new - the first of it's kind here. It was very intense but good - a combination of engineering, product design, UI, UX, HCI, visual design but more concentrated on physical prototyping using sensors & processing. I would like to take more formal training in industrial design though, as I can see that's your background? I'm currenty working on a new personal portfolio but I would love to get your feedback if you have the time. Good luck with your project(s)! You can also contact me at dgar9601@uni.sydney.edu.au
Cheers,
Dave
thanks Dave, we have another designer from Australia on the project. I'll pair you up with him and have you both ideate on the logo & visual design for the project. Send me your details to pauric@pauric.net and I'll get you started. Thanks /pauric
Hi Pauric,
Sounds like a fun project, I would love to help out if you are working
with people remotely. I am a UI designer based out of San Francisco,
with some background in video editing and animation. Are you doing any
motion graphics for the piece? I really like the branding on your home
page and think a short animation to explain a summary of the money
flow would be very interesting to see.
Thanks

Try the Taproot Foundation - they have fantastic pro bono projects.
