IxDA Toronto is planning another Speed Mentoring event for September 20th, after a very successful night last year. If you're interested in taking part, please contact @jeffkraemer on Twitter or email jeff.kraemer at Gmail.
Speed Mentoring is like Speed Dating. You'll meet several people for a few minutes each, and get a quick sense of who your "matches" are--whose needs and interests and commitment level match yours. If you're a mentor, for example, maybe you don't care to look at portfolios, but you like to talk about career planning--you can (and should) be up front about that. The commitment is flexible--you decide how much time you can commit, and
whether it's face-to-face, or strictly by phone or online. And. It's. FUN.
Why mentor? You'll learn by teaching. You can expand your practice by giving advice to another IxD'er, whether it's about what books to read, or what their next career move should be, or the best place for labels on forms.
Why seek a mentor? You'll learn from someone who's been there. You'll develop connections in the UX community. You'll have someone to bounce questions off of who's probably already answered them themselves.
