Let's flip this question: what sort of questions would you ask of a company where you are interviewing as a Sr. UX or Director?  I would want to know about resource allocation methods, whether a Strategy department exists, whether there is a hierarchy amongst departments, and what the UX role is in a typical project life-cycle.

It seems harder to ask about intangbles, like team-building and work-life balance.

I've been in this position a few times, and I certianly have the skill in interviewing them than they do me. It's a good thing to do, and as an interviewer I always respect it.

Things I often ask:

  • What's your team size (perm and freelancers)?
  • How do you collaborate and share knowledge outside of projects?
  • What sort of percentage split should I expect to apply to my diary (billable work, thought leadershippractice development, recruitment, new business, line management etc.)?
  • Costing models - e.g. Time and Materials vs. fixed price?
  • My day rate and any utilisation target I may have?

Probably more as well,

Jason
