Shivanand's suggesstions of trashcan and X can lead to more questions because the context and what is possible is not clear for e.g. Trash icon can mean that undo is possible... 'X' icon somehow gives me a picture of a delete rather than a cancel, especially becuase i picturize it as a red color X icon. And btw red color for other cultures can mean something else too :)
So the advice is to first articulate the context of use and then go ahead...
After severals A/B testing for our product, delete is good with "-" in conjuncture for adding "+". About the cancel button, my opinion is that nothing beat the word "cancel".
