I am a working graduate student at DePaul University. I'm currently enrolled in their Master of Science in HCI online program. I live in Louisiana so UI/UX/IxD communities are almost non existed here. Does anyone have any  suggestions for future students who are interested in Interaction Design but live in an area where there isn't much opportunity or community around?

This could be an opportunity to do some freelance work leading to a remote position. While not many, there are companies who hire remote UX people. You'd be able to stay put but work in the field with salary and benefits. Start with companies that offer good work life benefits and see if they'd be willing to negotiate a remote working arrangement, maybe starting out as a temporary arrangement.

The other opportunity would be to relocate if you are open to it. Many large companies will pay relocation costs. You don't have to leave the south. Georgia and Texas have lots of design jobs!

Thinking local, take a look at newspapers, television stations, web design companies, universities - they could have UX jobs but call them "web design". Might be a chance to create your own job.

Thanks Samantha for responding. I'm taking your advice and searching for freelance positions. I'm really hoping this leads to something until I can be able to move next year. Thanks again
