Hey all,

I'm trying to visualize a pretty complex interaction with a system of devices and was wondering whether there were any good visual examples out there.  At a high level, I'm looking to storyboard the interactions of the system from beginning to end. This system has multiple users who are using multiple devices (think smartphone, tablet, etc).  Unfortunately can't get into details, but I'm looking for ways that people have solved this visualization problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance,
David

Xplane's work is good inspiration for this kind of thing: http://www.xplane.com/portfolio/

I've done this for large systems, with stakeholder maps that show the interactions between personas, as well as workflow that crosses application and persona/user boundaries. We used mind map software, often just whiteboarding or doing affinity mapping with post-its first. Another thing that worked well is a swimlane diagram -- different users or applications are horizontal rows (or vertical if it works better) with the taskflow for each user/grouping in its own lane, but showing the connector arrow where it interacts with a different group in another lane.  One example for UX is http://iainstitute.org/documents/tools/ExperienceDesignFlow_bw.pdf

Another source of inspiration is Hugh Dubberly, who has a lot of concept map info on his site, like this case study of a site redesign: http://www.dubberly.com/articles/using-concept-maps-in-product-development.html
