I am looking for websites that do not display navigation (in the traditional sense) on the homepage. Yes, any link could be considered navigation but I am specifically looking for sites that lack navigation until the user is deeper within the site structure.
What are your thoughts on this presentation? Could this be a jarring or unexpected experience?
Example 1: www.tumblr.com

Smashing Magazine recently published an article on Creative Navigation Menus:

I don't see any examples where the navigation doesn't appear at the top level like you described but this could provide some inspiration.
Also, here's another well done example of scrolling navigation:

Hope this helps!

Most webapps have a different homepage than rest of site. Homepage is intended to do sales only. Eg: Flickr, Dreamhost etc..
Are these the kind of examples you are looking for?
This is another example of a site that treats navigation somewhat differently on the homepage.

This used to be called a 'splash page' and has fallen somewhat out of use, although admittedly the tumblr.com home page is a little more useful. The tumblr page does not leave registers users in the 'what do I do now?' state so should work pretty effectively - EXCEPT that the 'sign up' link is well-hidden further in the site.
This design is extremely counter-productive for recruiting new users. I don't understand why it isn't on the home page. (But I am sure you would not make the same mistake)

I wasn't talking about a splash page, but I think everyone gave me some awesome ideas!
