We need to know the age of users and their children to invite them to take demo-graphically targeted actions on our site.
Privacy concerns are being raised around getting that specific information, and we're thinking of going with Month/Year instead of asking for a full DOB.
I'm suggesting we go with a dual drop-down interface showing months (January, February, etc.), and years (1993, 1992, etc., (users have to be at least 18, so starting there).
Has anyone seen better UIs for this type of input? Is there any need to offer tool tips/other info about why we don't need an actual dob?

Well, month / year is how every credit card entry form asks for this data.
Hello,
Be aware that your users may feel uneasy providing this kind of sensitive information and they will be questionning the reason.
I wonder if requesting their birthdate is what you need. In the end, you're more interested in their age. (How old are you ? e.g. 30 y/o).
Even better, maybe you can only ask them to choose an age group (18 - 25, 26 - 35, ..., ).
If you can't walk down this path, a field like "Date of Birth" should be enough. Also, Prefer an input entry for the year, as choosing from a drop-down tends to be tedious .
In the end. You'd better do a quick user test on this particular issue, or maybe you run an A/B test it

Reposted as obviously, my mails don't go through.
