How did you first get into interaction design?

I recently wrote a post about how I became an application designer. Originally I worked as sound designer/ editor for games in Los Angeles, and had a need for tool to help my colleagues and I on job, that I managed to design and develop. In the year that followed, I phased out dialog editing and became an application designer instead! My post here:

I consider my trajectory unusual, though I suppose other people have also launched into this field by creating a solution to a problem in a different field. I'd be curious to hear your stories.
