Hi,

I recently applied for the HCI courses at University of Washington and IU, Bloomington. While I'm awaiting their results, I thought I'd quickly get an opinion from the members of this forum on the respective courses. Since you guys have heard and probably analyzed these courses, it would really help if you could help me make my decision.

To begin with my interests in HCI are purely for researching and engineering new interfaces. Thanks to Dave Malouf and his patient attempts at trying to draw a distinction between HCI design and HCI research, I think I'm pretty set on spending my time and energy on HCI research rather than learning design.

So I would really appreciate if you could help me out with which university's course structure is most suited for HCI research? Also I've heard UW is a very good research university - does this hold good for their HCI course as well? Is the HCI course at IUB more design focussed or research focussed?

Deeply appreciate any info you can provide on this.

Thanks.

Hi,

I know some students at IUB. They said the HCI/D program is more focused on "experience design", which covers not only web, mobile, but also some physcial stuff, service design and museum experience design... You can also tell by their portfolio:

As far as I know (also know someone @ HCDE), the projects they do at UW are mostly web, mobile apps and systems. And all of their classes are night classes.
