I'm wondering if and what you guys use for quick (and relatively cheap) online user testing. I know there is usertesting.com and feedbackarmy.com. Does anyone have any experience with these or can you recommend any others?

Thanks,

Deanna

My experience with usertesting.com has been positive. You get results quickly and they provide different tools for annotating observations, and sharing video fragments with the team.

The man limitations I found were:

Small geographical diversity of users.

Users are mainly from USA, Canada and UK. When you are interested in testing with either a diffeent audience or a broader audience it is not possible at the moment. So if you are testing an UI for a translation tool or Indic input methods, then it will be difficult to find users that meet your requirements.

Limitations of unmoderated tests.

Since you are not able ot interact wth users on real-time, you cannot "dig into the user mind" as you see them confused, or even help them if they are really blocked. That is more relevant when testing early prototypes where only the minimal set of interactions for the test scenario work.To compensate this, usertesting allow you to contact the testers after the testing session for additional clarifications.

If you prefer to moderate tests youself, a cheap option is to use Google Hangouts which allow easy videoconference and screen sharing. that set-up also works well.

I've used Usability Hub for very fast-and-dirty unmoderated tests. Depending on what you need, they may have a testing approach that would be a fit for you.

There are several different user testing tools, it depends if you want to run unmoderate user tests or, for example, set a feedback form on your website. Probably the largest collection of remote user testing tools could be find here: http://usabilitytools.com/
