Sites that sell a product, but also provide content

I'm working on a new site that sells a service but also provides content related to that service. I'm struggling on how to make sure the content doesn't just feel like a marketing ploy for the service. Any examples of sites that have done this successfully?

Bold Highlights in a letter emailer. How effective are they?

I am working on an emailer in a letter format to be sent to different promotional industry clients.

I have two options to format the letter in.

1) Highlight certain salient points within the letter.
These are many and the letter looks like its a mistake and it gets confusing to understand if the letter is in bold or in regular font.

2) Without highlighting the important points in the letter.
This one reads as a simple letter without formatted text.

An invitation to redefine the role and skills of a UX Designer

I would like to engage the UX designer community in a discussion about the different roles and skills necessary in today’s User Experience design field.  We have allowed many people in years past to define, or try to define what a UX designer is.  From developers, who may see us as simple-minded individuals who don’t understand basic UI design principles, to the business executives, who may see what we do as the final frosting decoration on the cake.

UX / Design / Marketing workshop recommendations?

Does anyone have recommendations for great workshops they've attended
in the Bay Area recently, having to do with UX, design, or marketing?
A full-day or half-day workshop would be ideal. I've read through
the IxDA events listings, of course, but would like to get the input
of the whole community. Thanks!
