Log in/log out icons- which padlock to use?

Regarding new log in/log out icons for mobile Android app- my product mgr wants to use the padlocks. Would Log in be the closed or open padlock (and log out would be the other, obviously)? On the one hand, I think when it's "locked" (closed), that means you're logged in already... but I've also seen it where the locked means it REQUIRES a log in... opinions??

thx

Most effective location for social media "share" icons?

From your experience, where is the best place on a page for social media icons?  Beginning of article?  End of article?  Right rail?   Depends on...?    My guess would be near the title.

Tips on selecting icons for web applications?

Hi there,

I'm looking for any resources or tips on selecting good icons for functions unique to a certain web application. I personally don't design icons myself, and think I could be successful using those already out there for purchase.

If anyone could give insight on a couple of things, that'd be great, too:

1) Should icons on a toolbar always be labeled, or will a user be able to learn them after using the application regularly?

Toggle buttons - what icon function to display?

I was looking for your opinions on toggle buttons: should the icon on the toggle button describe the consequence of pressing the button, or should it describe the current state  (in this specific case, open/closed for adding data to)?

Icons for Internal Links

I was just curious if anyone uses an icon for internal links (similar
to the box/arrow icon for external links). Specifically, I am
thinking of header links, when the header on a page section links to
that section. On so many sites, i just see a color assignment for the
header link which doesn't always seem obvious and depending on the
header style an underline could look out of place or clunky.

i am new here so maybe there is a convention already in place but i
couldn't really find anything searching the archives discussing
icons.

Recommendations for icon-designers?

Currently working on a suite of web-apps (CMS, CRM, task- and
project-management etc). The UI is in large part going to be
white-labeled by the various clients and consequently the little
graphics that are going to be universally present will in large part
set the visual tone of the apps.

I've been searching the good ol' interweb for the above-mentioned
resources, but was wondering if anyone here has any good
recommendations for talented icon designers suited for this kind of
work?

Icons vs. Symbols

I need a little help here. I'm creating a site with a photo search
like Getty or Corbis. The client wants a series of buttons for each
photo denoting functionality. Here's the list:
-add to favorites
-Quick Quote (emails artist)
-Add to Quote (like add to cart)
-Compare photos (click to add to comparison list)

This feature is all about the photos, and my experimentation suggests
that picture icons fight with the images and defocus the page. I want
a series of four symbols, all characters in equal sized, slightly
spread out gray boxes:

Holiday Gift from Adobe: New Icons for their Apps

Bleech.

Perhaps the pumped-up color coding will make them easier to find, but all
square?!?

I hope this isn't a sign of things to come.
