LifeRay Enterprise Portal UX Flexibility?

Anyone have any experience working with LifeRay for an enterprise portal solution--particularly interested in the UX impact point of view? I've been tasked with devising an enterprise portal solution for a media company and need to assess the pros/cons of going with an out-of-the-box versus custom solution.

Other recommendations for Portal designs always welcome.

Thanks!

How to display relevant home page as per the user type for first time users?

Type of Website: Portal

Target Audience: Companies that need art (artworks like vector art) and order sampling done. These companies are Promotional Suppliers and Distributors. There are first time users (lot of them) and existing client base.

The entire process is set online for receiving art till the point we invoice it.

Objective: Intuitively show personalized home page depending on the type of first time user (here -> Supplier or Distributor).

Intranets: Portal and Portlets or Dashboards

I've been tasked with developing the requirements and UX for an
Intranet. The IT folks are talking about a portal model with the
multitude of legacy applications fully integrated as portlets.

I think that a personalized dashboards with single sign-on and links
to apps is OK with info feeds to the dashboard as appropriate.

My fear is that the portlet approach is too complex to successfully
design and implement. This sounds like the type of project destined
to fail. I was wondering if anyone has evidence-based POVs on Portals
vs. Dashboards from a UX / Usability / Project success viewpoint.

How to transition seamlessly to a new design from an old one?

This is my first post, since I have been an avid reader of ALL the
advices and comments from intellectual people over here. But a small
question popped in my mind when I came across a website that was
redesigned and I was completely lost. Pardon me if this query has
been answered before.

It's an employee intranet portal which had been operational for
around a decade. The UI wasn't changed one bit in all this time.
Later the organization decided it was time to move on and did the
best they could with the UI design.
