Online or traditional training method is best?

In your profession, is self learning using online forumns and discussion groups and ebooks or attending traditional way of training helped more?

I used to read lots of books and actively using discussion forumns like IxDA, LinkedIn Groups and blogs of experts than attending traditional way of training. My last company I worked thinks that since I was not attended any training in their period, even though I was gaining good knowledge using web, that I am far behind in gaining new knowledge.
