Response times for panning and zooming in geographical maps ?

I'm looking for some guidance on response times for basis GIS
functions like panning and zooming.

We're developing a new GIS viewer for our information system but we
are not sure about the responsiveness to the end user.

I already found the web response time overview of the Jakob Nielsen,
but that is a bit to general.

Anyone has some suggestions or material ?

With regards,

I am periodic lurker on this list, but I thought this might prompt
some interesting discussion.

I just wrote a post on my blog

examples of "HUDs" on the web?

Hi all,

Does anyone have any examples of web apps that use "HUDs" or "Heads-Up
Displays" to give the user feedback?

I'm talking a really light HUD here - basically a little rectangle that
comes up in the middle of the screen after the user completes an action,
says something like "Your widget has been deleted", and then fades away
after a couple of seconds.

The idea is to create feedback in the user's locus of attention rather
than somewhere else on the page where they might not be looking.
