Design consistency

Hi all, I am working for designing of UIs for applications across wide range of Mobile devices and all major platforms - iOS, Blackberry, Android, Microsoft. In most cases, there is a need to deliver an application Interface design across all devices and platforms, in such scenario - can anybody suggest how to maintain the consistency of interaction, visual design and interface usability across all devices and platforms?

The practice and art of style guides

I have the opportunity and task to create a style guide for our existing product. Our company is set to double in size this year and as the only (so far) XD person scale is an issue. I've started research style guides but thought I'd ping the expertise of this group as well. So here are a few questions...

consistency or usability

I'm so tired of this argument, and I'm hoping this group can help provide
facts.

I recognize that some things in the UI should remain consistent - like an
interaction model. But often a deviation is required - ironically for the
sake of usability. Maybe you need to enlarge a button to emphasize it's
importance, or maybe the interaction model that worked 80% of the time falls
down in some cases. For me, deviation is a battle with stakeholders outside
of design. They want everything consistent.

Consistency and conceptual integrity

The importance of consistency, and what consistency really means with regard to software design,
has to be one of the most misunderstood and misapplied principles. I am constantly tortured by
development with the misuse of this concept.

I would love to get comments/feedback/thoughts from any interested list members regarding my
post on this.

Dilemna between consistency and efficiency

Hello,

I've got this little dilemma :

Basically, I deal with a user task which frequency is low, but very
important to configure and updating the system. This task includes two
sub-tasks:
1--> a multiple selection in a large set (>50) where the average
selection number is 5 to 15 items. Each items have some meta-data that
can be useful to the user to make its choice.
2--> a multiple selection a a small set (<10) when the average selection
number 1 to 3.
