Re: Role of IxD in Open Source [was: good interface examples for web basedapplications]

Now that's a topic worth discussing.

I've often thought about putting in some time on one of the Open Source
(OS) CMS products, as I believe there is a great deal of functional
value there. With few exceptions, there are significant ID problems
with the OS products (CMS in particular).

good interface examples for web basedapplications

As I said in my first post on this subject I have been intimately involved
in CMS UI design for the last 3 years.

Mitja, e-mailed me privately that EMC was meant to be ECM as in Enterprise
Content Management. I suggest people use the term CMS b/c a silly company
decided to buy the biggest vendor of CMS and their name is EMC ... Silly
name people.

Saying that designers are upset with CMS is like going to the prom and
saying the decorations stink and complaining about the band and the food
when you decided to have nothing to do with the preparation.

Where have we been?

Modality of Web forms

I am designing a my.yahoo style solution. I noticed
that Yahoo's edit pages have a Finished button only
and no Cancel button.

I went to Edit->Edit Content for the Headlines panel.
I clicked on Delete All Headline Choices, but did not
press Finished. Then, I clicked on my Home button,
and all my headlines were gone. Isn't that a design

If you want to try a less destructive interaction, add
some headline sections, but don't click Finished.
Click "Home" button on browser (assuming my.yahoo.com
is your home). The new headlines will appear in your
news headlines.

Behavioral mapping?

Hey there,

I was wondering if anyone had any tools or references for how to
behaviorally map out an interaction design? In this case it is of an
existing product.

What I want to do is get to the core semantics and syntax that makes up the
behavior in such a way that we can go back and re-arrange the behavior into
a new structure and give that behavior a new presentation.

The closest thing I have found is the Visual Vocabulary of Jesse James
Garrett, but its not quite complete enough for me in its set of nouns,
verbs, adjectivies and adverbs.

Creating a proposal for field research

Hey there,

I've been tasked with the job of writing a proposal to my supes to convince
the powers that be that field research will give real results and show true
value to all involved stake holders. I'd love to gain some insights from
others who had to do the selling of this great idea to people who just don't
get it at all.

Background: I work for a very business driven company.

Label left or right align

Basic stuff I know but...

Putting political persuasion aside, does anyone have an opinion on aligning
form field labels left or right to the form field.

I generally prefer to right align so that they remain in close proximity to
the device they are describing. Left aligning (which does have it's pro's in
defining a bounding area) can cause issues with marrying the label to the
device unless using a background colour to suggest the relationship.

Kind regards
