Equity in IxDA

Inequity is a catastrophe that affects everyone. Passionate protests and social unrest have shaken institutions and shed new light on the ongoing crisis. They point to the urgent need for parity for oppressed, overlooked, under-represented populations around the world. Black lives matter. Social justice is overdue. Change is required.

The mission of IxDA has always been to improve the human condition:

We believe that the human condition is increasingly challenged by poor experiences. IxDA is committed to improving the human condition by advancing the discipline of Interaction Design. To do this, we foster a community of people that choose to come together to support this intention. Diversity, inclusion, and parity are core values. IxDA relies on individual initiative, contribution, sharing, and self-organization as the primary means for us to achieve our goals.

IxDA stands against racism, sexism, homophobia, nativism, patriarchy, and misogyny, and all forms of inequity. We are redoubling our efforts to fight patterns of white supremacy and colonialism. Below are the commitments we keep. We continue to strive to do better. Our processes involve self-examination, community dialog, and seeking expertise. We draw on our mission and principles, evaluate where we are now, and continue to work for meaningful change.

IxDA’s Ongoing Commitments

to recognize the fundamental relationship between design and identity
to use our platforms to fight racism as the interaction design community
to continually examine our organizational and governance practices for systemic racism and eliminate those that act as barriers to diversity, inclusion, and parity within our community
to ensure our Code of Conduct manifests that IxDA is an anti-racist community, and hold ourselves accountable to this standard

to seek out and collaborate with design communities organized to address racialized peoples’ concerns, both to educate ourselves and to amplify this work as a resource for our broader community
to ensure IxDA events are a platform for all voices, and to measure representation — in person and content — as a metric of this commitment
to seek diverse representation when we speak as IxDA — on stage, as juries of our peers in developing programming, in selecting work we hold up as worthy, and as advisors and mentors
