Ph.D. in HCI (was: JOB: Opsware)

I would expect someone with a Ph.D. in HCI to have excellent research
skills, extensive knowledge of methodologies and theories, and the ability
to write papers, but I would never assume or expect any more interactive
design skill than someone without a degree.

Further Education in HCI (was: JOB: Opsware)

I think that brings up some really interesting discussion points.

1) Should a person be doing a Masters or PhD in HCI or related field without
experience in industry?

I think it's always valuable to have experience to give you real world
perspective and think about how to apply things as you're going through a
program.

Anyone who has a masters or PhD here should have the Director of
Product reporting to them.

Summer interns needed - IxD and D

Hi all -

I'm looking for one or two summer interns to help me out with some
application design and more visual design projects. This could be a great
opportunity for a student or someone who is just starting out with IxD or
UI design and needs to grow their portfolio.

The positions do not pay, but we will work to get you college credit
if possible and figure out a flexible schedule. I'd also be happy to help
you spec out and build your portfolio.

interface patents

My company is aiming to "productize" an online community application that we custom developed a few years ago. I'm working on redesigning the interface and I'm wondering if we need to be mindful of any existing patents. Are there specific web interfaces or combinations of widgets that have been patented or are in the process of being patented? And any patents specifically pertaining to community/collaboration web apps?

Any experience, knowledge, thoughts are much appreciated.

Thanks!
