Hiring woes, searching for the best

This might be just a NYC thing ... but I think I'm seeing signs elsewhere
...
Is it my imagination or is it getting really hard to get top-tier talent to
work in-house?

It just seems to me that everyone (almost everyone) is moving to create
their own consultancy. I can't think of a single "guru" in the field who is
in-house (not working for a consultancy theirs or a big name) anymore.
What's w/ dat?! Many of them have recently made the switch from in-house to
consultancy in what could be perceived as a mass evacuation.

I can see a few things that may be causing this:

About the BayCHI/BayDUX last Tuesday...

Hello Everyone

I just want to give you a brief report on the BayCHI/BayDUX event in which
IxDG participated last Tuesday. Several hundred people turned out for this
Silicon Valley event, which took place at Kresge Auditorium on the Stanford
campus.

The event opened with a networking hour, during which the ten participating
UX groups had an opportunity to talk with people face to face about what
they offer to our community. These groups included AIfIA, AIGA-ED, BACHFES,
BayCHI, SF IDSA, IxDG, SIGGRAPH, STC, UPA, and UXnet.

Event Report: NYC-IxDG October F2F

Hi all,

Thought you'd be interested to hear about our recent
NYC F2F, which took place this past Thursday evening at
Parsons Design Lab in Manhattan.

We had a nice turnout--about 20 people--to hear Dave
Heller present "IxD in Context ... UX design
Explained," a good overview of current thinking about
User Experience. You've all heard the huge variety of
discipline names used to describe "what we do." Dave's
presentation took a look at some of the models that try
to make order of the soup.

Your views: How to characterise people for design?

If you had to list the characteristics of users that would be important
to consider
in designing a product, then what would they be?

I am interested in finding out your thoughts about user characteristics and
its use in design.

Auto-tabbing in web apps

Hi,

I came across an interesting conflict recently where two users fed back
completely contradicting views on auto tabbing in one of our web
developments.

One found it very usable - and the other was ripping there hair out with
rage.

I personally find it useful (i.e. on online banking applications for sort
codes) because I usually have an equal usage in apps of both mouse and
keyboard and therefore tend to keep track of the focus. However, the users
who dislike this and find it counter-intuitive predominantly use the
keyboard and therefore through standard tabbing usage (i.e.
