Silicon Valley Event :: The Future of Digital Product Design :: with Dirk Knemeyer

Hello Everyone

IxDG, the AIGA Center for Brand Experience, AIGA-ED, and BayDUX are
co-sponsoring an event on December 8th:

The Future of Digital Product Design

Dirk Knemeyer will speak about the present and future of digital product
design. Following Dirk's presentation, professionals working in various
aspects of digital product design will participate in what should be a
lively panel discussion on this topic. In addition to Dirk Knemeyer,
panelists include Neil Day, Pabini Gabriel-Petit, James Leftwich, and Luke
Wroblewski.

"Feel" it

The first significant custom application I ever designed/developed was for
an outfit in the New York Fashion District. The owner kept telling me if
somebody could one day create an electronic way to sell clothes, he'd be
very rich (obviously this was years before the web; TV and kiosks were what
he had in mind then).

It turns out, however, that today returns of clothes bought online reaches
40%, mostly due to dissatisfaction with the fabrics (cf.

Sorry, Jared, you are right. Most "bottom-lined" people think in terms of
quarters.
Long term strategy is something I'm currently unfamiliar with b/c of the
type of organization I work for.

<windows key>-D works the same way. I use it quite often. The only
difference here is... do it twice and it restores all windows (though
it doesn't always restore the same one on top that you used last).

I maintain that design, usability and customer focus will work virtually
every time and for anybody.

Amen! I would just add a "all things being equal" to this statement.
There are a few things that can throw a wrench into the gears:
government regulations, natural disasters, lack of resources/time,
marketing, management, etc.

Personas and Inclusive Design

Dear List Members,

I've been thinking about the use of personas in Inclusive
Design/Universal Design
[e.g. http://www.idsa.org/webmodules/articles/articlefiles/Mueller.pdf].
What strikes
me the most is that if we look at able bodied users, personas can be
used as a tool
to characterise user groups for design.

user panels

Hi,

Have any of you been involved in the successful use of user panels/advisory
boards in a UCD process? If so, are you willing to share some details about
how it was used and what went well/poorly? My company has a customer
advisory board, but it's made up of executives from customer companies--I'm
looking to create panels of actual users and administrators.
