This is my first post to this list since I subscribed.

I'm not sure if everyone/anyone here has played with it yet, but Archy
(www.raskincenter.org) is working pretty well. The developers say
there's going to be a public alpha release "really soon" (like they're
not just joking). If you go to the site, buried in the Windows
install instructions are the CVS settings:

Server: cvs.sourceforge.net
CVS Root: /cvsroot/humane
Project: reducks
User Name: anonymous
No Password

Try it out. It's really cool.

In defense of Cheating

This is an interesting article written by Don Norman on the current need to
change the education system...Hope you enjoy reading it. I have pasted it
without any formatting...

In Defense of Cheating

Donald A. Norman

In a recent issue of Ubiquity, Evan Golub examined the

implications for cheating of allowing students to use

computers during examinations (Golub, E. (2005). PCs

in the classroom & open book exams.

FW: visuosT - announcement of book & accompanying website on strategies and concepts for knowledge work

Didn't see this come through here, but think it's quite appropriate for review.

The animated demo Lango offers gives nice visual insight into his ideas.

Funny story, what can happened if programmer does interaction design (or doesn't do it)

We have functionality, what allows to user change input forms. Some time ago we decided that we need to export data to xml and it can be using input forms. So we found out that design was not needed this time because user interface didn't changed and programmer started to work. Deadline was close and programmer did it at weekend. On Monday I looked what he did purpose to test it (speed and everything).

Motivation to use software

I'm writing first time to list. I work to the company which creates electronic document management, groupware and CRM software as interaction designer.
I started to wonder, can I create something motivating to software beside needed functionality and I found out what I can create praise functionality: if user does something first time or when user finishes his/her task or case small flower shows in upper right corner. I think it can create better feelings to users on a "blue" Monday morning :) don’t you?

My advice, ask them to pay you.

Re: Trends in Interaction Design

I think that absolutely everything in that article is true, right on,
and absolutely correct. Except...

These things aren't merely something that's going to happen, but
something that's been happening in interaction design work for at least
fifteen years.

Usability and User Experience Design

I just finished reading this article -
http://www.stc.org/intercom/pdfs/2005/200501_6.pdf about trends in UI and
I'm wondering if others agree with the author about what those trends are or
if there are other issues/trends that people think are important going

CHI Get together was a big success

Last night a bunch of list members met as CHI didn't quite start yet
(starts this morning). We had about 20 people from all over the country
come together, as we were gathered together by 3 locals. Thanx! Bill,
Carrie, and David.

It there are others at CHI who couldn't make the dinner because it was too
early, the IxDG has a booth in the Exhibit area and we would love to meet
more list members and have a chance to chat.

We are sharing this booth (Courtesy of Cisco) with Univ. of Washington and
some other UX groups.

Design Implementation

For the last few years I have been constantly working to create an
application development team that works well with interaction designers. I
would like to hear some advice from the group about this topic.

I know that many times interaction design can get distorted once developers
get their hands on the work. My goal is to create a development process and
team to improve the follow through of design concepts once they go to
implementation. So far my main focus has been finding the right people.
