5th, from 6-8.

If you are interested please send an RSVP to

Hope to see you there!

Another way to uncover users' latent needs?

After reading a fair amount on ethnography, empathic research,
and other methods targeted at getting inside the user's mind,
I'm wondering if it wouldn't be "easier" to approach it from
the other side: to train users to communicate their latent needs.

The techniques mentioned above can be costly to implement,
and users' domains, in some cases, can be difficult for a designer
to completely understand.

DESIGNER ----/tools/----------------------> NEED <---/??/---- USER

Is anyone aware of research on training users to uncover and communicate
their
latent needs?

Toronto UX Irregulars meetup this Wednesday

(Apologies for the cross post)

Hey Kids,

After a long summer, the Toronto UX Irregular meetups are back, and as
disorganized and eclectic as ever.

The next meetup is taking place this Wednesday, October 19th at The
Communist's Daughter, 1149 Dundas West at Ossington. We're looking
at meeting around 6:30 and going for about 2-3 hours.

If you're in the Toronto area, it's a great opportunity to talk about
designing and making cool stuff with other people who design and make
cool stuff.

Welcome to IxDA: A Message from the President

Dear IxD Discussion and IxDA Announcements mailing list members,

I'm very pleased to announce a momentous occasion in the history of
interaction design.

On the 29th of September, the Interaction Design Group (IxDG), which
sponsors the IxD Discussion and IxDG—now IxDA—Announcements mailing lists,
officially incorporated under its new name, the Interaction Design
Association (IxDA).

Our name change represents much more than just a new identity.

NYT Magazine Article on Interruption Science

"A picture of 21st-century office work emerged that was, [Gloria
Mark, an HCI researcher] says, "far worse than I could ever have
imagined." Each employee spent only 11 minutes on any given project
before being interrupted and whisked off to do something else. What's
more, each 11-minute project was itself fragmented into even shorter
three-minute tasks, like answering e-mail messages, reading a Web
page or working on a spreadsheet. And each time a worker was
distracted from a task, it would take, on average, 25 minutes to
return to that task.
