New Metaphors for Interface Design

This has been making the rounds, if you haven't seen it yet:

"Sources for interface metaphors abound. In the past, we leaned
heavily on the world of the office and its folders and desktops,
because we thought we were building interfaces mainly for office
workers. But today, information work and information workers are

Interaction Design Exercises

Hello there,
I've been asked to come up with a design exercise ideas for the hiring of a
mid-level interaction designer at my agency. I have a few ideas of my own
but since I was never asked to do an exercise myself, I'm reaching out to
the community to get first hand recommendations and/or rants about your
design exercise experiences.

Any insight you can provide will be appreciated. Thank you and happy

The Decade of Interaction Design?

Something to discuss at your next IxD Holiday Party:

Someone (and not an interaction designer) recently said the following
to me:

"The next decade is the decade of interaction design."

I laughed it off, but then I thought, well, maybe she's right. We're
seeing a variety of new interactions possible on the web. Mobile
devices are both more ubiquitous and more powerful. Companies like
Disney are exploring new and different types of interactions in
physical spaces. We've got robots like Roomba invading our homes.

Web design firm recommendations

I am looking for some recommendations for web design firms that have experience designing ecommerce wevb sites. I am, I will say upfront, looking for firms that are moderately priced.

I have a major project that I need help on. It involves creative strategy, web design, branding, and user experience design.

If you have any recommendations or want to pitch me your services, send me an email at wendy.fischer at motricity.com.

Interaction design, and educational tech for tots

Heya folks, I just posted on this in my blog but it occurred to me that many
of you probably have some pretty interesting thoughts on the matter. There
was an article in today's NYT about screentime babies are getting with
interactive technologies. I'm without child so I can't speak to this with
authority, but personally, I'd prefer a kid's first two years to go without
electric face and for interactions to be reinforced with the real thing, f2f

Icons and ISOs

Does anybody knows if the ISO documents related to icon design and use are
really useful?

I'd like to be sure before spending my money on it.
