trees bad for navigation

Can anyone point me to an article I remember
seeing arguing *against* trees for navigation?

CfP: HWID'06 Update

I apologise for cross-posting, but I want to bring this announcement
to the attention of Europeans in particular, since the conference is
in Portugal and offers a very generous package for its price.

I've also spotted that at least one of the organisers is a member of
our community, which made me feel almost jealous that the announcement
wasn't posted here originally. Please feel free to publicise
IxD-related events in our community. Also, I would like to encourage
those who help organising the events to acknowledge their event role
(e.g., Chair, Committee Member, etc.).

"The Curse of Information Design" - ??

The website A List Apart reposted an article by Scott Cohen about the
apparent curse of information design (see
). It really ruffled my usability feathers- what do you think?

Messaging Patterns

Hey all,

I'm attempting to determine industry standards for website communication but am having a hard time finding any formal documentation.

What constitutes a "warning" and an "alert"? Is a warning a subset of an alert? How about a reminder, is it a type of warning?

Putting the DESIGN back in ID.

Hello there, I'm trying my darndest to keep reading a design list which
focuses on business. Can we all take a cognitive test and admit that
design is an art form?

(It is.)

I'd like it if we could all send in some links on what they consider ID
to actually be. For example, here's a bunch of projects which are much
more interesting than your typical regurgitated form elements.

How about you?

Do UX designers suffer from perfectionism?

I am just wondering if any of you have ever been accused of suffering from perfectionism when you're designing and working on projects. Somebody just told me that many usability folks suffer from perfectionism and it's their biggest downfall.

I'd like to think that I am flexible and that I am open to suggestions when collaborating with engineering.

Seeking testers for Ajax UI prototyping/development software

Seeking beta testers for interaction designer Web development
workbench software.

IWP is software with the mission to bring next-generation interactivity
and usability to real-world Web applications. It is for designers and
development teams whose focus and skills are the Web; for building
applications with your choice of HTML and CSS, that are built with
your look and standard Web technologies.

This tool makes it easy to prototype live, testable "Ajax"-style user
interfaces without server-side code or programmer support, using HTML
renderings of sample application data.
