Marc Rettig Presents “Interaction Design is Language Design”

In this seminar Marc Rettig will explore the idea that when people
use an interface, they are engaging in an act of language use.
Designing an interface, therefore, amounts to designing a new
language. Designers associate symbols with meanings. They create ways
for people to use symbols in sequence to express complicated
meanings. But what meanings? What symbols?

It may have been a legacy issue from the days when the firing timing was the most important skill since many of those early games only allowed one or two moving 'bullets' on the screen at once.

Web Application Functionality: Rich Text Editors

Does anyone here have experience with rich text editors for web applications?

I am the information architect and interaction designer at a non-profit foundation. I have designed a web application that my organization uses to intake, review and award applications for research grants. This year over 1000 applications were submitted online and we are awarding about $50 million dollars to scientific researchers at institutions across the US and abroad.

In previous years, applications for research grants were uploaded as .pdf files.

Whiteboard/Web-Conferencing Software?

I work as an Interaction Designer for Business Objects in Vancouver and I am
in need of Whiteboard/Web-Conferencing software so that our team here can
effectively communicate with the other half of the team in Paris. We want
to be able to review screenshots, Flash, and PowerPoint presentations while
making notes on an upper transparent layer. We don't necessarily need
application sharing, simply the ability to communicate suggestions. We've
tried Microsoft's, Live Meeting, as we have pre-existing accounts, but it
doesn't seem to have the features we are looking for.

IPod ecosystem (NYTimes) - changes in all aspects of design

This NY Times article highlights the growing speed at which design and
implementation needs to occur in all aspects of product development,
especially when said product development is completely dependent on other
people's work.

The story is about iPod, but it could be about anything where someone is
taking advantage of someone else's success.

I think the mash-up phenomena needs to be cautious
