3D charts

I know I read a nice little rant somewhere recently about how using 3D
charts was unwise when compared to 2D charts that were designed much more
simply, but I can't seem to find any info at all now about why one might be
better than the other.

Personally, I find 3D charts to be way too full of "chart junk" - more
graphics than data - but does anyone here have any more solidifed insights
on the subject? Any info would be much appreciated.

Thanks ...

UXCampNE (note, it is now North East and not NYC) following up

Just coming back from the IA Summit, I did a bit of talking up of
BarCamp (see barcamp.org) and more specifically my idea for a barCamp
styled event this year on the NE side of the the Continental US.

I got some great energy and enthusiasm from people, and wanted to make
sure that some basic information about BarCamping was out there for
folks. As noted above the real details are on the BarCamp Wiki.

Ok, here's the dealio ...

BarCamp - Think of this as open source conference.
* no financial commitments to attend
* everyone who attends presents or helps out in another way.

JOB: Senior Project Manager at Behavior

[sorry for the cross-posting]

Behavior is seeking a New York-based Senior Project Manager for a full-time
staff position.

Candidate must have 5+ years experience managing web design and development
teams on large scale large budget projects (think high six-figures, or seven
figures in dot-com-era-dollars). We're looking for someone who loves
managing projects and people, who can be meticulous with a team who is
already deeply committed to a high-quality design-centric approach, and who
understands the unique challenges of working with both creative- and
technology- based projects.

"The Brain" and "MindManager" and Post-it notes

Mind mapping tools

I wonder if anyone used the low tech approach: mind mapping,
brainstorming and categorizing with Post-it notes. How does it compare
to the software?

On positive side Post-it notes seem to be more collaborative, to have
lower participation threshold by virtue of being low tech (similar to
paper prototypes) and because people get a chance to physically move
around, play with their hands while pasting notes on white board. Is
this correct assumption about ease of collaboration?

The setbacks I see: 1. No remote participation, 2. Archiving results
for reference and 3.

Digital Voice Recorder

I like the Olympus DM-20. It was clear, had plenty of space, downloads using USB, small in size (comes in a small zip bag) and the file types didn't have to be converted to play. I recorded conference call interviews, in-person interiews, and restaurant interviews. They all came out pretty good.

Dead Space: GUI Layout Question

The generic form of the question is this:
What resources are out there that talk about resizing windows, and what
to do with dead space that results in some cases?

The specific form of the question is this:
We're working on an animation program (taking still frames and
arranging them into animations).

This is the general layout of our GUI:

All the components are of a fixed size, except the preview area (the
big box in the middle), and the timeline (which is of a fixed height,
