Outdated Icons

I've been noticing icons lately that sooner or later will be outdated.
Let me give you a few examples-

In MS Word, when I want to save a document, I click the diskette icon.
It's actually been years since I used the 3.5" diskette, but it's still
associated with "Save."

In a meeting last week we used the speaker phone for a conference call.
The on and off buttons showed a telephone handset oriented either
vertically (phone off receiver - On) or horizontally (phone on receiver
- Off).

setting up an interaction design position

Hi everybody,

I am the first interaction designer of a company (300 employees) I work for. I have to setup my job description and a communication plan from-who-I-get-which-information-to-what-end.

Question: Has anyone else on this list experience with a similar case (you have to define your job yourself in an organisation)? What proved to be important lessons?

I also have all the assets and freedom to setup a usabillity lab.

Question: Secondly has anyone setup his own usability lab, lately? What is the most convenient equipment?

Yours faithfully,

Simon A.

Unofficial IxDA Reader

I've been experimenting with a few new tools for reading the IxDA list. They've helped me get
more out of these discussions lately, so I thought I'd invite the other long-suffering digest
readers to try them out.

The main page gathers the IxDA discussion archives (from dreamhost.com) into a blog-like
interface. You'll see the entire month's posts in a sidebar organized by conversation (ala
Gmail or Outlook) as well as the comments in a thread all stitched back together onto one

At CHI? Why? Or why not?

Hi there,

About a year ago there was discussion on this list about the pros and
cons of CHI, with one of the themes being that CHI was too
academically oriented. I've been asked to assess the reaction of
folks to the attempt to redesign this year's CHI conference to deal
with a broader set of issues.

As of this year, the conference is providing additional tracks
oriented towards various communities with things like experience
reports, interactivity sessions, and a variety of courses integrated
into the general conference format.

Help locating a IXDA member

Hello Group,

I was wondering if anyone can help me locate Ji Kim who posted here quite often about visio prototyping. I need to contact him. If anyone can pass on this information to him I would appreciate it.

Luke Wroblewski Interview Excerpt

IxDA Board Member Luke W on visual interaction design!

"Think of visual design as the “voice” of interaction design and
information architecture. It communicates the importance of (and
relationships between) the content and actions within an application."
