'R&D' vs. 'mainline' design & usability

Hello -

Do you have similar experience you can share? I'm a solo usability practitioner
responsible for both analysis and design for a small software company. I'm
getting mixed signals about what my priorities should be, especially because we
are simultaneously dedicating lots of resources to pure selling, and to
improving what customers already use. So, my time is being divided between the
needs of our pre-sales team and development.

My question is - how common is this?

[Fwd: USB products - food for thought]

Ping Mag for people who don't know is out of Japan and sometimes has
diddies like this article that highlights an exhibit that focuses on how
to bring physical design into what is normally our virtual world. I
found the pieces in the exhibit to be very creative.

Just thought people here might be interested.

Does Sustainable Interaction Design Exist?

Google tells me it doesn't. But I'm convinced that there have to be
certain principles that interaction designers can follow that are
more environmentally friendly than others. I work at a product design
company filled with designers looking to develop products that are
less damaging and more environmentally friendly, but for the most
part, interaction designers are stuck on the sidelines developing
interfaces and screens that don't have any of the material or
manufacturing choices of industrial designers.

No Exit Point in Wizard Design

When I went through the process of transitioning from hotmail to Windows Live Mail Beta, I noticed that the wizard only had the "Continue" button. There was no way to get out except for closing the browser. Even the top logo was not linked to anywhere.

I had no problem of going through the wizard to make the transition successful.

Fwd: Personas development - best practices

Yes, I was thinking about the very first iteration, before user
prototype assumptions are verified/validated with actual users.

Another small piece of relevant personality type trivia. In
'Persuasive Technology' Fogg referes to research in which submissive
personality types preferred submissively phrased computer messages and
dominant liked dominant messages.

I wonder if there is more research along these lines but for different
personality traits.
