Patterns vs Principles (was good template examples)

I disagree and have a not-hidden agenda that we as a field are too focused
on principles and practices when, as a user, all I need are solutions to
many problems that have already been solved.

interaction design & graphic design

Hi All,

I work at a company where I am the first Interaction Designer they've ever had. And this company doesn't want me to touch the surface of the graphic design of user interfaces. They are new to interaction design and I feel I have to explain them a lot about my expertise. But they seem not so open to discuss my part of interface design. They seem not be able to understand how the graphic part of interface design and usability are intertwined. So no Photoshop.

I feel a little uneasy in explaining them how these are intertwined, it feels almost to much too explain.

Three New Interview Excerpts

For your weekend/Monday morning reading pleasure:

Shelley Evenson on Service Design:
"When designing a product, much of the focus is on mediating the
interaction between the person and the artifact. Great product
designers consider more of the context in their design. In service
design, designers must create resources that connect people to
people, people to machines, and machines to machines.

"Elements of Interaction Design"

I feel we have a language issue here... "elements" seems to mean
something for someone and more a general thing for others.

what do you mean by elements, then?

from what you wrote in your blog they seem to describe the elements to
consider when designing a product (digital or analog). People and
Context is shapes, constrains and influences the design. So how would
you call these 3 things (element, people, context) as a whole?

IMO, the title "_the_ elements of IxD", calls for the things we need
to look at/think about when doing IxD.

ADMIN: CSS2 books & Pen-based tools (summary request)

Admin request:

This is a great thread!

I was wondering if someone would be willing to summarize this thread and
the thread about pen-based tools, and enter them into the IxDA Library.

I think threads like these are great opportunities for us to collect
some knowledge and the Resource Library is a great area for us to not
only do referencing, but also engage in conversations about those
references in the standard blog like way.

No need to chime in here, but just do it.
