What do we do now? (Was: Users' Goals)

As usual, I'm going to start with a statement, but I promise there's a
question at the end of all this mess. :)

The difficulty goes beyond recognizing what the users' actual goals are. We
have to design with the business/applications goals in mind as well. The
point where the two sets of goals intersect is the where the value of a
product lies.

There are excellent methods for attempting to understand users, but I think
a strictly analytical approach is limited.

check-out and trust (was...Google Checkout's credit card widget)

to bring a new flavor to an older thread...

I work in ecommerce and get motion sickness everytime we work on checkout.
It's such a dinosaur to me. So many parts of it are vestigial. No one can
make a clear case for the features or path, and since they don't understand
them they're not going to change them. You can see so many places to
improve it, and encounter so much inertia when you try.

What about the desktop? (prototyping tools)

In our recent discussion of prototyping tools most of the
recormendations (e.g. Axure) were focused on Web sites and
applications. I work in a (Windows) desktop environment and wonder if
anyone has experience with Axure-like tools that work for desktop

Rapid Prototyping Tools

I am looking for a tool that would essentially allow me to make a "paper
prototype" that I can share with a remote participant. I have been
using DENIM (http://dub.washington.edu/denim/)- which does everything I
need. I am looking for an alternative because of performance issues.
Any recommendations?

Users' Goals

Hi folks

I just wonder ... in his book About face, Alan Cooper says that we need to
design to meet the users goals (or something like that)
so how can we know what their goals are ? not the ones that they says they
are ?

Tag Cloud Definition

We're including a tag cloud in a web tool we're building. I've done a
bit of tooling about the net to see what convention says about how a tag
cloud is best defined but still no real answer as it seems to vary from
place to place.

My understanding of a tag cloud is as follows:

-Holds the top x occurring tags occurring within the system (x being the
number of tags we want to be in out tag cloud).
-Is shown in alpha order or from most recurring to least recurring (but
this style to me doesn't seem to serve the aesthetic whimsy of using the
tag cloud in the first place.
