San Francisco Residents - HELP

Hello all. I'm attending a usability course in San Francisco on May 8.

http://www.usableproducts.com/training/index.shtml

The course ends at 5 and I hope to catch a 6:30 flight to Seattle. Any
residents of San Francisco know if I can make this? What's rush hour traffic
like in San Fran. If I took a cab from the St Francis hotel downtown to SFO,
could I do it in less than an hour?

International Design Forum in May

Bringing design to the Arab world ... a great collection of designers
take on this issue and create a forum for doing so. While IxD is not
represented here well or at all, the mix of ID and Architecture and
other design problems of space and volume is interesting.

Smartphones are computers?

Hi list!

We tend to believe that people has some sort of mental "scale" from
phones to computers. Something like this:

Basic phone > Feature phone > Smartphone > PDA/UMPC> Laptop PC > Desktop
PC

It seems logical to put all the "phones" in one category and the "computers"
in one category. However my working theory is that "normal people" actually
consider smartphones to be computers. This has some serious design
implications.

Transcription Services

Hi,

Does anyone know of any good transcription services that are quick
and accurate? I have a bunch of interviews I need to get transcribed
and it seems that the local talent is stuck in the land of mana.

Thanks,

Kevin

Taxonomy + Folksonomy ?

Howdy all,

(sorry for cross-posting, I don't know where to go anymore)

I'm imagining a system (for a project) where a fixed taxonomy exists,
but where each node in the taxonomy is also associatated (editorially,
by humans) with a series of folksonomy tags.

So, for example, the system's fixed taxonomy might have:

Animals-->Carnivores-->Felines-->DomesticCats

Each node of this taxonomy might then be associated with various free
folksonomic tags, so the taxonomic "Animals" might also include any data
object tagged with the folksonomy tag "critters".

Web Form Design book in progress

Hi all,
Just wanted to make folks aware, I recently began work on a book for
Rosenfeld Media about Web Form Design. I hoping there's genuine
interest on this list in the topic as Interaction Designers deal with
forms A LOT.

As such, if you have experiences, ideas, or best practices to share
from your work -I'd be very interested in hearing from you. Either
float me a note directly, leave a comment on the book in progress
site, or subscribe to the RSS feed there to simply stay in the loop
on discussions.

JOB: Interaction Designer - opportunity at a small design studio

DesignMap, Inc. is looking for a very talented and motivated
interaction designer for help on a range of projects.

We are specifically looking for designers with a Graphic Design or
Interactive Design degree, or equivalent work experience. You must be
able to display typographic and layout skills, we are firm believers
in having fundamental design skills, no amount of reading blogs,
attending conferences, or passion for webdotwo-ness can replace that.
