"Human Factors" angle on our field

Happy Friday all -

At risk of opening the "defining the damn thing" can of moray eels, I
have a related question for you:

Assumption: Design people - even good ones - can come from an
interaction design background/angle, a front end developer angle, an
information architecture angle or an HCI angle, among others. It's
pretty easy for me to relate to/evaluate/learn from/grok those design
folks who show up here at IxDA, and/or whom I might see at the IA Summit
or at CHI.

Flickr image annotation

Does anyone know around when Flickr provided the feature to select parts of an
image an annotate it (or have any blog entries which talk about it)? I am
trying to create a citation and would like to provide more information than
just "Flickr, last accessed 2007"

Hi all,

Can someone please, p l e a s e, PLEASE help me. I'm looking for
exisiting, actual, examples of ROI related to usability (and/or UCD).
When I do a search on ROI and usability, most of the examples are from
the previous century or the beginning of this one and are rather vague.

So, what I'm looking for is something along these lines: we had 100
visitors on our homepage, we adapted the navigation and now we have 200.
Or, we sold 10 items a day, we changed the ordering process and now we
are selling 15 items a day.

Dan's piece is a sterling and concise example of what many long-time
design practitioners, and particularly consultants, know from
experience and common sense. His follow-up statements went even
further to clarify what he was talking about, and just as
importantly, what he wasn't talking about. I found his essay to be
spot on.
