Desktop application, enabling or disabling the OK button on error?

Hello everyone,

I am debating whether or not I should disabled the OK button on a dialog box until the fields that need to be filled are "error free". Let's assume I have two fields on a dialog box: Name and Position. On dialog open, the name is empty and the position is defaulted to a predetermined value (which is editable). Let's assume I clearly identified both fields as mandatory. Do I leave the OK disabled until a name is entered or do I enable it and provide an error message if it is selected with no name entered?

Old guard vs new guard designers

I've been wondering whether there's a slow ground shift happening in
interaction design.

Here's the scene:

- Most of the current experienced designers I meet (old guard) haven't had
formal training in interaction design, and many haven't been trained in
design at all.
- Most of the junior designers I meet (new guard) have had some kind of
design training, increasingly frequently in interaction design.

In the many recurring discussions about "what makes a good interaction
designer", the old guard folks often don't express a strong preference for
design training, and also often pref

Anyone know a great “Graphics Designer” experienced with complex application re-skinning?

Hi All,

I've been looking to find a great "Graphics Designer" who specializes in
designing complex application interface skins, and have
interviewed/reviewed/looked at all sorts of designers and agencies, to no
avail.

This role is especially difficult to fill as there are many
designers whom design web sites, but very few who design complex browser
based application interfaces.

The desired designer would redesign the look and feel/ software skin and
framework of a large and complex browser based application.

"Cutting Edge" Web Design References

I'm looking to brush up on what are considered to be "cutting edge"
techniques for web design--especially in terms of layout and the utilization
of CSS (rather than a focus on the use of AJAX.) I am still using mostly
table-based layouts and am starting to feel like something of a dinosaur.
Can anyone recommend any good web references and/or some good books on the
subject?

Thanks

Steve
