iPhone, who's buying... /sustainable design

I'm going off on two tangents here that may or may be related to each
other and the original post. Sorry. :-)

All this chatter about battery life is reminding me of an awesome
presentation I saw at CHI 07: sustainable design. Maybe some of you saw
this presentation as well. To summarize - what impact do the designs we
create have on the environment around us? Especially those of you
designing tangible products like mobile phones.

Pauric asked if charging a product is part of the holistic experience of
using it.

Crafting a user research e-mail... what to say?

Hey all,

I've pushed hard enough to be able to reach out to some users of our web
sites. We can blast out an e-mail to the students to grab user interview
candidates. I need to write the e-mail, but I wanted to first ask if anyone
had anything like this laying around I could use as a reference. Also, any
best practices?

Usability/design problem - Users type "google" in

This is exactly the opposite of another common browser problem. That is where the user has the home page set to google or yahoo, and enters the url (www.whatever.com) into the search engine.

Five videos from the Waterloo IxDA F2F

On June 14 the IxDA face-to-face in Waterloo, Ontario held an event called
"The 7-Minute Soapbox on User Experience Design." Materials from that event
(including video and slides) are now available on my blog at:

I've actually posted a few in the previous weeks but today managed to get
the last two online.

The event was a fast-paced and fun 90 minutes, with about 40 people
participating. Six speakers gave presentations following a strict format: 7
minutes of presentation followed by 3 minutes of Q&A.

Usability/design problem - Users type "google" in intranet search form

This comes up regularly, and we don't have a very easy way to find out
how to solve it, or if it needs solving:

The #1 search term on our corporate intranet portal is "google", even
though any user in the company can type "www.google.com" in the
address bar just a few inches above.
