Consistency and conceptual integrity

The importance of consistency, and what consistency really means with regard to software design,
has to be one of the most misunderstood and misapplied principles. I am constantly tortured by
development with the misuse of this concept.

I would love to get comments/feedback/thoughts from any interested list members regarding my
post on this.

A question about Personas

I am becoming really interested in personas. I come from a product
management background but I am working with a client to help them define
their requirements for a highly interactive web application. I want them to
approach the design from a User Experience perspective and feel that
developing some personas as early as possible in the discovery/design stage
will be valuable.

I am wondering if it would be valuable to create a repository of personas as
templates or starting points for interaction design. Does such a thing exist

Is IxD more than software?

Ok, I shifted the thread b/c we were getting all mixed up between the
architecture thread and this one.

It seems to me, and I'm just extrapolating, is that you believe that
design in the end is all about form? I wish this was a conversation so
that I can get a yes, no answer from you and then move in different
directions accordingly. For the purposes of this post I'm going to go
with "Yes".

[I do think you believe in strategic design, but this doesn't seem to
be your main craft, or a main part of your argument about interface
vs. interaction design.

IxD as architect

Well, some interactive designs are mission-critical (airplane cockpit
controls, etc.), though most of us admittedly work on websites that may
fall apart but do not fall on people's heads.

Still, the point in common between architecture and interactive design
is that, unlike a conductor or filmmaker, both design an arrangement of
conditions that will affect, but not fully dictate, a set of future
events. How people behave in relation to what has been designed may
largely follow the signposts created, but users of both buildings and
interactive programs are unpredictable.

SXSW Panel Picker is live

I noticed that the SXSW Panel Picker went live today - I saw a few
panel proposals from a few IxDA regulars (and voted accordingly).

If you haven't voted for the panels you'd like to see, now's your chance!

PICNIC 07, Amsterdam

Registration is now open for PICNIC 07 in Amsterdam this September. There's
a lot going on -- in fact, it covers a full week. The first event -
PICNIC¹06 - took place in September 2006, and brought more than 5.000 people
to Amsterdam.

I'll be there all week and doing a session on augmented reality on the 28th
and there's more then enough content to interest the IXDA world!
