effect of color on Web sites

*"Color is one of the most important non-verbal forms of communication.
Appropriate use of color greatly impacts user experience" [world usability
day]

Can someone please point me to research done **to understand color
associations for different kinds of e-commerce websites? e.g. selling
clothing, shoes, furniture, beauty products. Or effect of color on websites
designed specifically for a demographic group - sport fans, women etc?

Thanks,
Oliver

IxD definition WAS Interaction Design forESLTextbooks?

Perhaps this statement encapsulates our disagreement. Just because I
believe that an Interaction Designer can be of value in most cases of
human interaction, doesn't mean that I think I am king of that
domain.

when the self-checkout machine pushes you over

Posted above a self-checkout machine at Home Depot in Vancouver, BC:

And my experience with the machine was as terrible as everything described earlier.

IxDA @ UI12

Just checking - been away because of the New Years!

Wanted to see - since our Boston IxDA group is just getting up and running -
wanted to know if any other people on the list are planning on coming to
Cambridge/Boston for UI12.

Personas

Philip: "Designing (personality traits) should almost always be a
consideration, no matter what medium"

I'd refine that to differentiate between a user driven task based
interaction when the automatron is assisting the interaction. I'm not sure
the former should necessarily engage a user in any way other than
transparently assisting goal completion.

Personas

That sort of artificial persona/personality design is a frequent component
of over-the-telephone speech recognition systems that occurs before the UI
design is created. It even gets done well sometimes. :)

And actually, even though vocal interaction leads to much more of the
perception, I think we've discussed before that personality traits are often
ascribed by users to visual interaction as well.

open discussion vs. community of practice?

Hey there,

In a bar w/ two blokes and one of them says, "I don't think you can
have both an open discussion list and a community of practice."

I've been scratching my head ever since.
Yes, first we need to figure out what a CoP REALLY means, so maybe the
discussion in this thread could start there. It is also a thread about
what do we want IxDA to become.

on your mark, get set, go!

User Awareness Cycle?

I don't know what to call this, but I'm searching for any literature,
knowledge or what-have-you on the "user awareness lifecycle."

Sales folks have models for prospecting:

Awareness, Interest, Consideration, Purchase, Support (and so forth)

Where their prospects are in the awareness lifecycle helps them manage
their time, focus their attentions in the right way, and so forth.

Has anyone seen a similar extension of the lifecycle to the user
experience?

Perhaps it would be similar:

Awareness, Interest, Consideration, Purchase, Receipt, OOBE, 1st Use,
1st Support, 1st disappointm
