IxD is like.... the use of metaphor in application interface design

Metaphor is an important concept in computer system design as well as in
language. Metaphor is more than just a literary device used for poetic
effect, it is an integral part of our language and thought.

Out of the box Portals

If you have access to Forrester, they have a wealth of research on portal trends and vendors in this field. IBM provides Websphere as one of the biggest competitors to Sharepoint (a richer portal environment, tho rigidly tied to Java, as MS is rigidly tied to .NET). Our company currently uses BEA Aqualogic, formerly called Plumtree, which supports both platforms well. All three vendors provide powerful, if expensive portal options.

Then there are off-the-shelf close-to-open-source portal platforms like Joomla, Jetspeed, JBoss and others.

[EVENT] - Boston IxDA F2F - PLEASE READ IF YOU ARE ATTENDING

not large enough to hold all 50 of us!

IxD F2F in Sweden tonight

Third Thursday again.

Come after work or later to the following spots in Sweden to have a
drink and talk IxD with fellow IxDers.

Natural language for search criteria

Hi everyone,

I am trying to find some information on natural language criteria for
filtering by date.

I am designing the interaction of the filtering feature of a product. People
can apply various filters to the items in the database to prepare subsets of
data. Specifying dates and selecting date ranges is a big effort because:
1. People rarely think in exact dates. Most of the time things happen today,
next week, on Sunday, and so on. For example, "My trip to Vegas was last
summer".
2. Computers do not understand dates unless they are formatted in a specific
way; say 09.10.07.

Accessibility in the Agency Environment

Curious to know how various interactive agencies are handling
accessibility. Dedicated accessibility group? Individual practitioners
floating across teams? Is it implicitly built into the process? Just
winging it?

Your new list administrator - Josh Seiden

For the last few weeks, yours truly has NOT been administering or
moderating the IxDA discussion list (and many other IT like
activities), but Josh Seiden has been doing that amazing job.

I don't know why I put this off, but I want to officially let everyone
know that Josh is your new "List Mom" so the saying goes.

It is always best to send requests, questions or comments about our
list or web site (beta & gamma versions) to list (at) ixda (dot) org
and not to people's personal address.

Also, doing a bang up job of being our new web site administrator is
Jeff Howard.
