Vista fonts

With Microsoft Vista, the company introduced new standard fonts that
viewers may now expect in your web pages. Thankfully, they released
them as freeware with the PowerPoint viewer, and they're extracted for

Microsoft's "mind reading" patent

Heres a scary thought!

Microsoft is applying for a patent to monitor user's brain waves in
order to determine the effectiveness of user interfaces. Could this be
the end of user testing as we know it?

Here is the url at BoingBoing where I read about it:

Congratulations San Francisco IxDA

I'm in SF this week at the IDSA/ICSID world design congress called
"Connecting 07". It's the premiere conference that happens every 2 years for
the industrial design community. It's big and its lavish with 150 speakers
from around the world.

Before going party hoppin' tonight on the studio tour, I went to the SF IxDA
event called INTERSECTION: where interaction design and industrial design
4 leaders of interaction design at 3 agencies and 1 internal group made 4
amazing and very different presentations (20min. each).

functional designer?

I wrote a post on my blog recently about software design which proposed
calling front-end design "interaction design" and back-end design

Ironically, a few days later our CEO sent me an article from Zigzag

Types of design values

I'd like to toss out a sentence for list members' comments:

"[D]esign methodologies such as value-based design, reflective design,
and critical design emphasize the value of explicitly questioning the
underlying values, habits, and assumptions that drive both users and

(the sentence comes from an as-yet-unpublished paper, not written by
me, so I can't give a formal source, sorry.)

In thinking about this assertion I find myself wondering how one
constructs and values usability within a practice that foregrounds
explicit questioning and presumably induces some kind of di

theory behind login screen of IxDA ?

I have a very tough time managing the passwords on the various collaboration
sites, and the list of the number of sites that one has to register is only
increasing. I registered with IxDA a couple of weeks back and have found the
discussion mails very helpful. I decided to login today and I was afraid, I
will have trouble remembering the password.

The login screen that was presented, lifted the weight off my grey cells. I
found it extremely intuitive to login to the site using the userid/email.

Is this the way to go for the new sites (at least for the collaboration

iPhone and Gmail - Oy Gevalt!

[File Under Gripe]
Tell me first if this has already been discussed.

I am currently in love/lust/embittered/confused/confounded and generally
dismayed so far with Gmail's implementation on my iPhone.
