Social app popularity begins to decline

Social apps are far more complex than single-user apps. I wonder to what
extent a lack of social psych research input into the design of these apps
-- the most popular ones having been designed by college undergrads -- is
causing their popularity to plateau? To me, this suggests a discontinuity
similar to the one that occurred when command line interfaces were displaced
by GUIs. Every GUI out there can trace its origins to the the
multi-disclipinary, thoroughly grounded research conducted at Xerox PARC. I
think it's possible to go only so far by the seat of one's pants.

IA Summit 2008 Program available and registration OPEN

The new IA Summit site is up and running (www.iasummit.org) - the full
program of pre-con and main conference sessions is available and
registration is OPEN.

In the past months I've read several articles and blogs about the
possibility that Jonathan Ive, SVP of Industrial Design at Apple, could
succeed Steve Jobs as CEO. As far as I can tell this is only a rumor, but it
prompts the questions: Is corporate America ready for the design revolution?
Can designers be CEOs?

encourage the use of real name

As with any social networking applications, the quality of a given social
graph heavily depends on whether your users are using their real name in
their profile. Certain features such as 'people search' won't even be usable
if users don't use real name when signing up.

So the question is how do you encourage user to use their real name instead
of their nickname. We can't really prevent a user from signing up using a
fake/nickname and there's really no way to tell anyway.

Continuous Scroll

As supported in the Sympony Open-Source PHP Web Framework, "Ajax Pagination"
allows the client browser to load the content gradually as the user scrolls
down to the bottom of the web page. Once the vertical scrollbar reaches the
bottom it triggers a new page to load. Unlike its common use in separate
frames(i.e. the inbox of Hotmail Live), ajax pagination(weird name) attaches
a new full page to the end of the current one.

Slanty Design

Slanty design describes solutions that purposely reduce aspects of
functionality or usability. It's employed when the system must
address wider goals than the user might have, when, say, they wish to
do something that in the grander scheme of things is less than
desirable.

Pen Tablet recommendations sought

Hi Miranda,

just bought the "Bamboo" as a Christmas gift for a friend. He is very
good at sketching in pen and papers, and judging from the designs he's
now making, it shouldn't take more than a couple of weeks for somebody
to familiarise themselves with such an input method. The tablet driver
controls the standard mouse pointer, so you can control any app
