Best practices for scripted interactions (for customer service reps)?

Are there any published, or web-available, examples of best practices for
handling UI design for applications that provide verbal scripts for customer
service reps who are talking to a customer on the phone while entering data?
(sorry, long sentence)

I have seen applications that handle these text snippets in scrolling text
boxes interspersed with data entry forms, or as speech bubbles like a comic
strip.

I'm interested in standards, ways that the text portions are maintained (e.g.
are there applications that do this like a CMS, or always as code embedded
in the rest of the application, or .

Ratio of designers to developers

Hey fab folks -

So I was at dinner the other night with the technical publications
manager here at my company, and he mentioned that the STC had stats on
how many documentation people a software company should have per
software developer, in order for the tech pubs team to be optimally
effective.

Do we have anything like that for designers? Anyone done any work
determining what the relative size of the design team to the dev team
should be overall for a software dev shop?

Why do crappy interfaces sell?

I just spoke with a client for who I did an interface review for a CD
product that is almost on the market. They told me that they loved my work
but they have been showing the product with the old interface to clients and
they already have a couple of orders for it so they're scrapping the review
work for now.

My question is: why do people keep buying products with crappy interfaces? I
guess that since most products ship with poor interfaces, people have very
low expectations. But these kind of products have been around for what? 15
years? They should know better by now.

fun Flash

If you've ever had to design one too many Web catalog pages you might
appreciate this.

Then again, you might appreciate it even if you have not. (As noted,
requires Flash in a Web browser.)

Using eye tracking to determine whether person needs more information.

Hi out there,

I am not sure whether this is the right forum, so sorry in advance if
not. But I saw some questions regarding eye tracking so I hope you
could help me. - BTW do you know forums that are completely dedicated
to eye tracking?

Okay, here is my challenge:

I am working since two years with eye tracking in the context of
dialogue systems. Currently I try to build a system which displays
information for several objects (e.g.

Online brochure vs. PDF download

Does anyone have any recommendations/ preferences with regard to online
brochures?
We have the option of providing a downloadable pdf that users can view/print
out for reading later, and/or going with a zmags.com solution that takes the
print brochure(s) and displays it rather sleekly in it's own window (Ikea
applies this solution). There is a link to download the brochure from the
zmag approach, but I don't think it's immediately evident to the user. Are
there any stats/suggestions?
