"home" links

Does anyone have any research and/or rules-of-thumb about the
usefulness of putting "home" in the permanent navigation? I tend to
want to leave it off because A) on most sites, I feel like once the
user is in the site, there's not really much of a reason for them to
go home, and B) The "click on the logo to go home" pattern seems
universal enough that everyone *should* know about it. OTOH, I can
easily imagine "Aunt Tilly" looking for the home link and getting
confused if it's not there. Are there times when it should be used?

My View of Interaction Design

Hi Everyone:

I've been an interaction designer for 30 years. It has been an interesting
experience to read all the posts on this discussion list about IxD and its
definitions. Some of the positions people take are interesting and mind
expanding while there are others that I disagree with.

I was recently involved in a discussion regarding the definition of UCD.
While that discussion did not converge as well as I had hoped, it did
inspire me to put down some of my thoughts about interaction design. I am
not attempting to create the definition of IxD - just to set forth my
definition.

The International Journal of Design (including Interaction Design)

Reposted with Don Norman's permission. I haven't had a chance to
check out the journal itself yet.

Subject: The International Journal of Design (including Interaction Design)

I'd like to recommend an open, high-quality on-line journal to the CHI
community: The International Journal of Design (www.ijdesign.org).

This journal is peer-reviewed (acceptance rate is about 20%).

Its all a bit confusing!

Hi guys,

I refer to the discussion on the difference between interface design, and
interaction design.

Im currently a second year student studying design futures, whilst my course is
a good course it allows me to find my own way in the world of design.

Acrobat Next View (page history)

Hi. We're having trouble pinning down tool-tip semantics for an indexed
"next view" history button. Is "Next View" ala Acrobat a standard? Are there
standards? Has anyone encountered or used a different name for this
functionality. How great was the "forward history" that was suggested to me!
zoiks! Any help would be appreciated. I think I've had my head in this too
long today and am fried.

Regards,

~d

BOOK Announcement: HCI Remixed

We're pleased to announce a new book that should interest IxDA folks.

HCI Remixed: Reflections on Works That Have Influenced the HCI Community

What is a remix? In music, a remix is an edited version of a song
that builds on the themes of the original while incorporating new
elements. But anything can be remixed, and in HCI Remixed we asked
contributors to reflect on a piece of work -- a paper, system or demo
-- that is at least ten years old.

International Journal of Design - CFP on Cultural Aspects of Interaction Design

I'm not involved with this, but saw it and thought that as the IxD community
that people here would be interested.
It does seem slightly academic in its approach, but it is IxD.

IMPACTS OF COOPERATION AND COMPETITION AT WORK ON CITIZENSHIP BEHAVIOUR, PERFORMANCE & WELL-BEING

Hi everyone,

I want to point you to an international survey studying the effects of
cooperation on work conditions, and discriminating agile teams/companies.

Here it is :
http://freeonlinesurveys.com/rendersurvey.asp?sid=bci7rnwbo7kkfsr389269

The results will be very interesting for the community, gaining some insight
on how cooperative really are agile teams (vs non agile organizations).

Thanks for helping to promote this study.
(sorry if you receive duplicates as I crossposted to several groups)

HUD design resource request

I'm currently designing a HUD
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HUD_%28computer_gaming%29

for a video game. Would any of you happen to have any resources pertaining
to this topic? The game is heavily driven by voice recognition and the GUI
needs to address the voice analyzer.
