OT: Webhost

Hi All,

I'm looking into web hosting for a client again, and thought I'd get
some opinions from this list. (Sorry if that's too off-topic.)

It's a small site, and I don't really expect huge traffic, but the
client is more concerned about reliability and support than price, so
something in the $15-25 range would probably make sense. We need PHP5
w/ MySQL. Shell access would be nice, too.

Coming Soon Pages

I have a client that wants to put several "coming soon" pages on their
site. As in a link that points to a page called "About us" but the
only thing on that page is the text "Coming Soon". Essentially links
to empty pages.

My initial gut feeling is that this looks un-professional (thinking
back to the "this page under construction" days). It also could
present some SEO issues, but I'm not too worried about those at this

KABK Netherlands and other IxD schools

I'm (still) looking for formal training in interaction/type design. I
noticed the KABK in Hague has a new course titled Interaction - Media -
Anyone here studied/is studying at KABK or in the Netherlands? I'm
interested in how things go around there in the field.

Also, what other good schools in Europe teach this kind of thing?

Interesting widget - WAS: argument for designing 1024px wide

Here is an interesting way of designing for screen size.

Look in the top right corner of this site to see the equivalent of a font
sizer for screen size.

Has anybody seen this before? I haven't. Other than the fact that I don't
think it's very noticeable, it's an interesting compromise between designing
a completely flexible layout and having to stick to the lowest common
denominator (i.e. 1024).

IxD'ers in Iowa?

Who else out there is in Iowa? I know there are some other IxD'ers in
this part of flyover territory, and I'd love to know who you are.

principles of content placement hierarchy?

Sorry if this is not the right way to start a new thread. I'm new to this
site, and couldn't find a way to start a new topic. I know the summary
sounds somewhat cryptic, but I'm not sure how else to put this. I know each
website has its own requirements, but I'm wondering if anyone out there has
any "industry standards" (ie Jakob Nielsen, etc.) for "best practice"
principles of layout in terms of where to place content on a page according
to how important it is to the user. For example, I have a client who has 2
"functions" he wants on his homepage...
