The best way to start new threads in IXDA Discussion?

It's rather strange to ask this question after having started a number of
threads already :), however I am puzzled with the fact that there is no
"Start new thread" button on the "Discussion" page at ixda.org
(http://ixda.org/discuss.php). At least I'm unable to find it.

Digital patina

Had a look at this Flickr set today:
http://www.flickr.com/groups/desire_paths [*]
It shows examples of when humans have eschewed the predefined path to take a
shortcut instead. Really nice visualisation of the path of least resistance.

How have you observed this happening online?

What's exciting in Adobe Thermo?

There's currently a lot of buzz about the forthcoming release of Adobe
Thermo. We all have read the article about the product and watched the
"sneak peek" video of the product's presentation.

It looks like everybody is very excited about the tool. I am curious to
discuss it and hear opinions.

Sign-up experience

Someone on this list sent me to platial.com and this website gave me a few
thoughts about their sign-up process.

I do appreciate the easiness. I am only required to fill four mandatory
fields and one optional.
(maybe instead of homebase it should say home city, for those that aren't
english natives)

And thank God, there's no captcha and no activation email. I can use my
account right away.
I do get an email, stating, among others, that:
" If you were not expecting this email, simply ignore it, no further action
is required to terminate the request."

DEFINE: Affordance

In the discipline of IxD, the word has been used to define a possible
action perceived by a user within some environment (Norman 1988). In the
classic example, the affordance of a door with a flat metal plate is
"push." The affordance resolves to a verb, an action to be performed.

However, of late, I've seen the word used loosely to describe the clues
that suggest an object's possible actions.

advice on usability testing for complex sites

Can anyone recommend methods for performing usability tests on large,
complex applications with lots of conceptual dependencies?

We're running into issues in our design of a test. We want to test
"Section B" of our application, but "Section B" doesn't make a lot of
sense unless you've already been exposed to "Section A". The trouble is,
Section A is pretty complicated in itself. They're definitely too big to
test together in a single 60 minute test.

What to do, what to do...!

Examples of web-based drag and drop functionality

i led the original design and development of myheavy (now heavy 2.0).

among the features was an "itunes for video" that we developed in early
2006, which allows you to drag and drop video from another user's profile
into your own libraries, or move them between your libraries or even
re-arrange the order of your videos.

here's a link to how it looks and works (no mouse cursor):

drawbacks - cross browser drag and drop is very pokey.
