A bit of the "flavor" of IxDA Interaction08 | Savannah

The caterer we used for our two sponsored parties got a mention in the local
magazine of Savannah for her work for the Microsoft-sponsored SCAD
Industrial Design Department hosted event on Saturday night.

This caterer was a find by our SCAD hosts and to me she made both events and
our lunch on Sunday a big part of the element of what made Interaction08 so

Take a read and get a taste.

iPhone 2.0 Game Over? I think not!

Our good friend on the list, Kontra, recently wrote an article on his blog
called "Who can beat iPhone 2.0,"
and he does a fairly good job of pointing out all the things working in
Apple's favor, including:
1. Design
2. Stores
3. Pricing
4. Webkit
5 Depth
6. SDK
7. Enterprise

Designing for Specific Audiences- in this caseFinance

The one thing I have noticed in designing productivity and decision support software for financial folks (specifically bond fund managers and traders) is that they can manage a staggering amount of information all at once. In fact, the reason I was brought on to that project (replacing a more dogmatic colleague) is because I was willing to increase the information density to an almost absurd level...imagine a color-coded dahsboard with almost no whitespace and 8-point fonts! The key was, they LOVED it.

how to position a new "beta" feature -- examples?

I imagine this might be a tough one, but you IxDAers never fail me, so
here goes.

Can anyone think of any sites that are currently offering two versions
of a particular *feature*, classic and beta?

To be clear, I'm NOT looking for:
- brand new sites that are still in beta testing mode
- existing sites that have an entire beta replacement site to try out
(e.g. Gmail's Older Version / Newer Version)

Instead I'm looking for sites that have, say, two different searches
available - their old search, and a new search that they're testing.

Degrees? ... Is this a good list to be on or off?

Check out the link above. It will take you to a Yahoo ad.
It first caught my eye b/c "Bounty Hunter" was listed first and I noticed
that the bounty hunter icon didn't meet my expectations, so then I started
exploring them all.
Oh! I also didn't know you needed a degree to be a bounty hunter. Good to

But then I noticed that there were 3 designers listed: Web, Graphic and

At first, I thought, "Whew!

Direct manipulation and personalized homepage

Hi all,

I am interested in receiving any feedback on designing interactions for
personalized homepages (based on direct-manipulation).
Anyone involved on this kind of design project or involved in usability
testing ?

Force Sensing Interaction Paradigms

I haven't been on the list in awhile but it doesn't look like anyone has
posted this.

Microsoft researchers built a prototype exploring force sensing technology
for mobile devices that lacked keyboards and had standard, rigid, components
that resist form articulation. This brings it more into the realm of
practicality, as many companies are not going to develop more pliable
casings (and thus more haptic feedback) due to manufacturing and materials

They hacked a Samsung Q1 UMPC with the standard Phidget analog kit.

REMINDER: [EVENT] IxDA DC Social: Monday April 28

IxDA D.C. Face-2-Face Social: April 28, Cafe Citron, Dupont Circle

IxDA D.C. is throwing a Face-2-Face Social so we can meet in person for
drinks, socializing, and planning upcoming events based on user (you—the
community) research. As such, we will be gathering both qualitative and
quantitative data on the interests of the local IxDA & IA communities. We
might even craft some personas (using pictures from later in the evening) to
bring our archetypes to life.

So — come one, come all to this April IxDA D.C. social event.
